A rant blog turned photoblog…

First Impressions

Now you probably saw this coming.
My mini review of wordpress vs blogger.

So lets get to the nitty gritty stuff
first off

Customization
WordPress doesn’t allow you to edit your template like blogger does, such as adding html, css etc once you pick a template you’re stuck with it. Having said that it does not mean you cannot add links to you side bar, wordpress has a system for this, which is good for the html noobs. The one problem I have with this system is the categorisation such as blogroll, my other sites or whatever you happen to name em, these are not standard across all templates. For example some templates will group all you added links into one single heading called “link” while others would seperate em into blogroll, associates, other sites etc.

I would regard the templates available to choose from wordpress are more aesthetically pleasing than blogger. They also have a downloadable version for people who have hosting services to use. This would probably allow you total freedom in customising, from html, to css to javascript etc.

Features
One welcomed feature is the categorisation of posts, good to get posts organised. Other features which significantly improves over blogger, some form of spam protection (works like spam protection on emails),password protect posts, widgets (have not tried this out yet so can’t comment), search function (something that I’d see myself using on other people’s blog) and stats. Most of these not available on blogger.

Something to note when composing a posts there’s a add picture function, and in addition to that there’s another upload function, which will host your file on wordpress, I have not tried this out yet so can’t tell whats the difference.

Dashboard
I can exactly say the dashboard is more user friendly than blogger, since it does not allow for template editing there are a hosts of additional features added to the dashboard, however they are still easy to use once figured out but may overwhelm a new user at first. There is also a function to import all your previous posts from blogger which can ease the transition of switching. Having said that I don’t see the point as most of you would have read all my latest posts on the blogger side.

There are probably a host of other features that I have not mentioned here simply because I have not found a use for em and have not tried em out. So herein ends my review.

Something I forgot to mention that is blatantly noticable on the blog page is a thing called pages, they’re simply additional pages in which you can post more stuff in. Again I don’t really see a point for this accept for the default “About” page, perhaps a page that pays homage to something as important as Tony’s fashion sense, valids a special space where it is seperate from all my other posts, but we’ll see…it certainly is something I find myself using in the foreseeable future.
